Study found that low-calorie diet relieves Alzheimer's disease in mice

Recently, researchers have found that a low-sugar diet that reduces total caloric intake by 30% can prevent a major disease feature (formation of amyloplasts) in a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. This diet prevents the formation of amyloplast plaques. The study was published in the FASEB Journal in January 2005. The study demonstrated for the first time that changes in diet can alleviate and possibly prevent Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Pasinetti and colleagues found that when feeding a disease-reducing diet to a mouse model of this disease, the mice did not show the physiological characteristics of the disease. The mice used in the study were genetically engineered to produce beta-amyloids in the brain, forming amyloplast plaques that are one of the most critical features of Alzheimer's disease. No amyloplast plaques were detected in the brains of mice fed low-calorie foods. Researchers adopted this diet system when mice were three months old and tested plaque formation in the brain at 12 months of age. The researchers found that calorie inhibition increased the anti-amyloid activity in mice. Because this diet only reduced calories by 30%, the mice were able to develop normally. Although they did not increase body weight like the control group, they did not lose weight and were able to maintain body weight within a healthy weight range. Surveys have shown that people who consume low-calorie foods are also less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. This new study provides a possible theoretical basis and possible mechanism for this investigation. Although current researchers cannot provide a specific recommendation for human diets, these findings provide for the first time reliable evidence that dietary changes may be a new approach to treating and preventing this disease. Next, the researchers will also study whether this role in preventing the formation of amyloid plaques can also prevent the decline in mobility.
