Imports of sugar in China rose from January to February in 2011

From January to February of 2011, China imported a total of 34,000 tons of sugar, an increase of 1.3 times year-on-year; the import amount was 0.2796 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 2.3 times. During the same period, China exported 9,998 tons of sugar, a year-on-year decrease of 33.1%; its export value was US$390,000, a year-on-year decrease of 25.7%.

South Korea and Thailand are the main source countries for sugar imports in China. From January to February of 2011, China imported a total of 24,000 tons of sugar from South Korea, an increase of 60% from the same period of last year; imported 0.64 million tons from Thailand, an increase of 2.8 times year-on-year.

In January-February 2011, China imported 49,900 tons of sugar, an increase of 75.8% year-on-year; import value was US$46 million, an increase of 83% over the same period last year. Among them, 34,000 tons of imported sugar, accounting for 68.1% of total sugar imports; lactose 0.74 million, accounting for 14.8%; glucose 04,000 tons, accounting for 7.9%.

The increase in sugar imports in China and the decrease in exports are caused by the contradiction between supply and demand. On the one hand, natural disasters lead to a reduction in sugar production. On the other hand, domestic consumption of sugar continues to increase, leading to a decline in inventories. However, this phenomenon is not unique to our country. On March 1, 2011, the International Sugar Group (ISO) significantly reduced the global sugar supply surplus in the ongoing 2010/11 sugar production year from the previously expected 1.28 million tons to 196,000 tons. In response to the global shortage of sugar, countries have introduced corresponding policies. From March to April 2011, Russia's raw sugar import tariffs will be reduced to US$50/tonne (October 2010, November, January and February 2011, raw sugar import duties are US$140/tonne; 2010 In July, August and September, they were US$239/ton, US$203/ton and US$171/ton respectively.) The EU decided to allow sugar mills to import 300,000 tons of sugar on a zero-tariff basis. The quota allocation will be on a “first come, first served” basis. In order to widely solicit the views of various ministries and commissions on the production of sugar for export, the Indian government postponed the time originally scheduled for February 22, 2011, for the export of 500,000 tons of self-produced sugar for three weeks.
