Professor Chris Toumazou of the Royal Academy of Engineering was awarded the 2014 Faraday Medal by the British Institute of Engineering and Technology for his invention of semiconductor sequencing technology.

Professor Toumazou's technique uses silicon microchips to identify gene mutations. Using a portable, low-power analysis platform, the chip can detect mutations within a few hours to provide a medical diagnosis. This technology has made medical technology a big step forward because it has changed the medical model from treating diseases to targeted prevention and diagnosis. In June of this year, Prof. Toumazou's technology was also awarded the prestigious 2014 European Inventor Research Award by the European Patent Office.

Professor Toumazou said at the award ceremony: "I am very grateful to the Society for recognizing my work and presenting this award to me. I am honored to receive this award. I have been working on applying electronic inventions to the health field throughout my life. The use of semiconductor sequencing to reduce the number of days it takes to diagnose a medical diagnosis to a few hours is a big leap to save patient life, especially for treating sepsis, because every minute for patients valuable."

Professor Toumazou's DNA detection invention is economical for hospitals and clinics because they no longer have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy a sequencer.

Again, this invention will have an impact on the UK economy. The global sequencing market is huge, with a market value of $6.6 billion by 2016 and a growth rate of 17.5% per year. The invention and breakthrough of this technology will help the UK become a leader in this field.

Professor Toumazou has set up a DNAe company to market his technology. DNAe is currently focused on the diagnosis of infectious diseases, and the company's first test will be used for DNA diagnosis of sepsis.

Sepsis is a common and potentially high-risk disease that is caused by infection and thus threatens life. It can cause inflammation, swelling and blood clotting, which can lead to a significant reduction in blood pressure. As a result, blood supply to vital organs such as the brain, heart and kidneys is reduced.

For patients with sepsis, time is a key factor in survival. Professor Toumazou's invention will enable clinicians to quickly and accurately diagnose a patient's infection before the sepsis worsens and help select an effective antibiotic to treat the disease.

Professor Toumazou also served as the chief scientific advisor to Geneu, the world's first DNA testing retail store. In the store, customers can analyze the genes of their skin in 30 minutes and customize anti-aging serum based on the sequencing results.

Toumazou decided to delve into the genetic disease because his son Marcus was diagnosed with a rare hereditary kidney disease. Therefore, he decided to invent a technology for early detection, which can transform medicine from disease to disease.

Professor Toumazou will be awarded a medal at the award ceremony of the Faraday Medal on November 19.
