Management of nursing dogs
1. Colostrum is the first milk produced by a mother dog within 5 days after giving birth, and it's rich in antibodies that help protect newborn puppies. It's crucial for puppies to nurse colostrum within the first 12 to 48 hours after birth to ensure they receive these vital nutrients and immune support.
2. In some cases, puppies may need supplemental feeding if the mother has too many pups, isn't producing enough milk, or refuses to nurse. Supplemental feeding usually starts around day 15, using fresh milk replacer that's easy to digest. You can also introduce soft foods like cooked rice and mashed vegetables to aid digestion. The daily amount should be about 100 ml, divided into 3-4 feedings, with the temperature kept between 27-30°C. By day 20, increase the amount to 200 ml per day.
3. Weaning typically begins around day 45, but if puppies are growing well, you can start as early as day 40. For weaker puppies, weaning may be delayed by 6-10 days. To make the transition smoother, separate the mother from the puppies initially. Then, gradually reintroduce them every 4-5 hours for nursing, and separate them again afterward. This method helps the puppies adjust while still receiving necessary nutrition from their mother. The process usually takes about a week to complete.
