The newly established tumor model can accurately formulate the optimal radiation therapy plan

A study in Edinburgh showed that cancer patients can benefit from studies of tumor response to radiation therapy.

Researchers say that those tiny sensors can monitor the inside of the tumors that are being built in the lab, which can help doctors improve their treatment options.

The team said the technology could be used to design a treatment plan that maximizes the efficacy of radiation therapy and minimizes adverse effects.

About half of all cancer cases in the UK receive radiation therapy, usually in a series of small doses.

Simulated cancer

A team of chemists and cancer experts created a tumor model of human cancer cells that mimics the real tumor.

A laser-activated sensor was inserted into the model, which allowed the research team to monitor the response of the tumor to different doses of radiation therapy.

Treatment schedule

Sensor readings show that changes in the treatment schedule of a course of radiation therapy can affect its effectiveness. Two doses of 6-cell radiation or 6 Gy were more effective in killing tumor cells with a single dose of 12 Gy or 3 doses of 4 Gy. Two doses of 6-unit radiation can reduce the acidity level in the tumor, which is a key indicator of tumor death. Microscopic observation of the model revealed that this treatment regimen can lead to tumor lysis.

Other doses have essentially no effect on the structure or pH of the tumor.

The findings of the study can guide future radiation therapy for a wide variety of cancers.

The study has been published in the Royal Society of Chemistry, funded by EaStCHEM, NHS Lothian and the Jimmy King Cancer Research Foundation.
