Grape autumn clever management
After the harvest, it's essential to remove fruit bags, any damaged or rotten fruits, and thoroughly clean the vineyard. For young vineyards where current fruiting branches have already developed, pruning techniques can help accelerate branch maturation. Specifically, new shoots should be topped twice, leaving two leaves after the first cut and one leaf after the second. This method encourages better growth and ripening of the branches.
This autumn, heavy rainfall created favorable conditions for diseases like downy mildew, particularly affecting varieties such as Giant Rose and Rattan. To manage this, it's recommended to apply fungicides like Jinlei, Kelu, Yinfali, and Metalaxyl regularly. Additionally, Autumn Spodoptera (a type of moth) has been active in multiple generations, causing significant damage in some vineyards. The larvae, which are 1-2 years old and not yet mobile, can be controlled by spraying insecticides such as Trichogramma (for moths) and Avermectin. It's advised to repeat the application every 7 days for effective control.
From mid-September to late October, it's an ideal time to apply fertilizers to support the vines. For arbor-grown grapevines, each plant should receive 20–25 kg of organic fertilizer, 0.5 kg of calcium magnesium phosphate, and 0.25–0.5 kg of compound fertilizer. For grafted or trellised grapevines, the amount increases to 25–50 kg of organic fertilizer per plant, 1 kg of calcium magnesium phosphate, and 0.25–0.5 kg of compound fertilizer. The fertilizers should be applied in trenches that are 30–50 cm deep, 40–50 cm wide, and 80–100 cm long. The layers should be mixed with soil to ensure even distribution. After applying the base fertilizer, the soil should be tilled around the base of the plants. Deep plowing to a depth of 1 meter is also recommended to improve soil aeration and stimulate the growth of new roots. This practice enhances overall vine health and prepares the plants for the next growing season.
