Feeding urea to cattle in summer and autumn

Urea is digested by microorganisms in the rumen of cows to synthesize bacterial protein, which can replace part of the protein feed and is a protein supplement feed for cattle. However, urea is not a protein after all, and its utilization efficiency is affected by many conditions. The addition of urea to cattle is only suitable for the winter and spring seasons, which mainly include wheat straw, dry corn stalks, hay, and other coarse feeds, and it is unfavorable to feed urea in summer and autumn seasons, which are dominated by green feed.

Experiments have shown that when the crude protein in the feed is below 11%, the utilization rate of urea in the rumen is about 70%. The effect on the weight gain of cattle is also obvious (increased by 39%); with the increase of the crude protein content in feed, the effect of increasing weight gain is reduced when urea is fed, and when the content of crude protein in feed reaches more than 12%, Feeding urea has not increased the effect of weight gain, but has begun to affect weight gain or significant weight loss.

In summer and autumn, there are many kinds of wild vegetables, weeds, and pastures, and cattle often use green feed. In the green feed, the nutrients contained are relatively comprehensive, especially the crude protein content is high, generally 12% to 20%, the crude protein digestion and utilization rate is also very high, generally more than 70%, the crude protein quality is excellent, contains the necessary Amino acids are more comprehensive and their nutritional value is higher. Therefore, the continued feeding of urea in summer and autumn seasons dominated by green feed will not only not achieve the desired results, but will also have the opposite effect.
