Common Names: Lanterns, Begonias, Chandeliers, Bells, Admiralty, Hybrids Biological Characteristics: The golden bell is a genus of shrubs characterized by smooth stems and slender branches. The leaves are opposite or sometimes whorled, lance-shaped or ovate, with serrated edges and pointed tips. Flowers grow in the axils, with pedicels ranging from 3 to 4 cm long. The flowers hang downward, and both the pods and bracts are nearly as long as the flower itself, appearing dark red with lobes that spread flat or curl slightly. The petals number four. Growing Conditions: Native to tropical America and New Zealand, this plant prefers cool and moist environments. It is not tolerant of high heat and thrives best at temperatures between 15°C and 20°C. It requires well-drained, fertile sandy loam rich in humus for optimal growth. Species and Varieties: Short Tube Fuchsia (F. magellanica): This variety typically grows up to about one meter tall, with drooping branches that are purple-red in color. The leaves are opposite or whorled, ovate-lanceolate, with sparsely toothed margins and hairy edges. The leaves have an emerald green surface with purplish-red stripes. The flowers appear singly, are leafy, and have pendulous pedicels around 5 cm long. The flowers are red with a red calyx tube, which is shorter than the calyx lobes—about one-third their length. The petals are also short, slightly inverted egg-shaped, and have a lotus-blue color. Gardening Varieties: 1. Coral Red (var. corallina): A compact dwarf cultivar with dark foliage and large, showy flowers. The corolla has an indigo hue. 2. var. globosa: Features smooth twigs with red veins, red pedicel bracts, and petals that are purplish-green in color. Their length is roughly half that of the calyx lobes. 3. var. discolor: A variegated form with short, colorful leaves. The branches are dark purple, and the leaves are three-lobed, ovate-lanceolate in shape. The flowers are small and numerous, with red bracts and a short calyx tube. The petals are blunt and shorter than the calyx lobes. 4. var. riccartonii: Has long, slender branches and very small leaves. The flowers are long and droop gracefully. The calyx tube is bright red, while the petals are dark in color. 5. F. Alba-coccinnea: A hybrid cultivated variety. The calyx tube is white and longer, with lobes that curl back. The petals are red in color. 6. Fuchongs (F. fulgens): This species can reach heights of 1 to 2 meters, with sparse hair on the stems and a thick base. The branches are slightly juicy and reddish, with long leaves measuring 10 to 20 cm in length and 5 to 12 cm in width. The calyx tube is long and narrow at the base, with a fresh scarlet color, reaching 5 to 7.5 cm in length. The petals are short, only about 1 cm long, and deep red in color. 7. F. triphylla: A low-growing bush, typically 20 to 50 cm tall. The leaves are often arranged in three whorls, green in color with a bright reddish-brown underside. The veins are densely covered with fine hairs. The flowers are scarlet, 4 cm long, with a long, swollen tube at the top. The petals are very short. Variants: Gorgeous Clover (var. superba): Known for its metallic luster on the leaves, making it a striking addition to any garden.
