First, the temperature during the flowering period is not suitable. The suitable temperature for watermelon flowering and fruit setting is 25°C～30°C, and the minimum daily average temperature is 20°C～21°C. Unsuitable temperature condition will seriously affect watermelon pollination and fruiting. At temperatures above 35°C, the function of pollen grains continues to decline as the temperature increases, and if it encounters a high temperature of 2 hours and 40°C, the germination of pollen grains and the elongation of pollen tubes are significantly reduced, causing insemination disorders. As a result, the number of fallen flowers increases, and even the result is often misshapen. When the ovary develops and the flowering temperature is below 18°C, most of the fruits formed are deformed, thick, hollow, and low in sugar content.
The second is more rainy days. Watermelon encounters rainy weather during the flowering period, it will affect the normal pollination, and it will be more difficult for the rainy days to last for a long time. Because of the rainy days, the development of the ovary and the floral device is affected, and the rainfall easily flushes the pollen on the female stigma or breaks the pollen to lose germination, making it difficult to complete the fertilization process.
The third is the imbalance between vegetative growth and reproductive growth. Pruning vines are irrational, planting density is too large, poor ventilation and light transmission, or plant growth is weak, poor pollination and fertilization is also caused by falling flowers or melon.
Fourth, improper management of fertilizer and water. If the watermelon is not properly managed during the growing season, it will make the plant malnutrition, and the stems and leaves will grow indefinitely, resulting in falling flowers or melons. In particular, when the amount of nitrogen fertilizer is too large, and phosphorus and potassium are insufficient, it is easy to make the plants long and easy to get anthrax, reducing the rate of sitting.
Based on the above reasons, the following preventive measures can be taken:
1, cut the main vine, the use of side vines melon. When it was found that the melon plants grew too profusely and they showed a phenomenon of leggy, they could leave 5-10 leaves of the main vine to cut off and use side vine cucurbits.
2, is the female tip. After the buds emerged from the female flowers, leave 2 leaves to the top of the leaves to remove the excess lateral vines so that the nutrient concentrates on the female flower development.
3, artificial pollination. Watermelon is an insect-borne flower and pollinating is affected if there are few insects. Therefore, the adoption of artificial pollination is an important measure to improve the rate of sitting, especially in rainy days. The method is to put on the first day of the afternoon the female flowers and male flowers that are to be opened on the second day are put on plastic bags to prevent the rain from getting wet, continue bagging after pollination, and immediately take off after the rain.
4, heavy pressure vines. In the melon section, gently pinch the stem, weakening the tip of the edge, so that the nutrient concentrates to supply the young melon, the so-called "head forward, behind melon."
5, rational fertilization, control growth.
