German biorefinery produces lactic acid from rye

A German biorefinery with renewable raw materials for lactic acid has been put into operation. This bio-refinery will use rye to produce lactic acid and plans to produce 10 tons of lactic acid annually.

According to the Berlin Morning Post, the bio-refinery plant near the Potsdam-Bernim Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Technology cost 3.2 million euros, of which 2.4 million euros came from the European Union, and the rest was paid by the federal government and the state. The government bears it separately.

According to Joachim Venus of the Biotechnology Process Department of the Institute of Agricultural Technology of Potsdam-Bornim Leibniz, the plan to produce lactic acid from rye has matured and can be used for large-scale production. At present, 100 litres of lactic acid can be produced with 1 ton of rye.

Lactic acid can be used to produce environmentally friendly solvents and decomposable synthetic materials. It can also be used as a basic chemical for flavors, acidulants and preservatives. German media pointed out that due to rising prices and shortage of resources, economically underdeveloped rural areas use rye to produce lactic acid, which is a good opportunity for economic development. For German farmers, the use of renewable raw materials is the goal of future development.
