Study found that Wasp chemical pheromone application in agriculture

According to an article published this week in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the head of the wasp releases a chemical that resembles a pepper spray when he fights with other bees. This result will hopefully be used to kill agricultural pests.

Scientists for the first time recorded a chemical transfer that occurred between a female wasp, Goniozus legneri, which was released during the wrestling of the wasp on other insect larvae. Humans could not smell it. Scientists also found that the side that failed to fight normally had the strongest release of gas.

The project led by Dr. Ian Hardy of Nottingham University was first used to study animal behavior. He said: "This wasp can kill a variety of insect larvae that harm crops, including apricot trees, coffee trees, coconut trees, etc. They have led to a reduction in agriculture, and the wasps can be used to effectively kill insect pests without polluting pesticides. But we must better understand the behavior of the wasps, which can help select the best combination of pests."

Scientists studied 47 pairs of female bees fighting. They placed the wasps in a transparent box with a larva that competed for spawning in larvae. Using a real-time analysis technique called atmospheric pressure chemistry mass spectrometry (APCI-MS), scientists first recorded the behavior of the wasps and then studied the relationship between behavior and chemical release.

The results show that usually the defeated party releases stronger chemicals. Hardy said: "Studies prove that the failing party will release a strong chemical that temporarily interferes with the winning party. This substance will enable other female bees to leave. If we can reduce the release of this substance we can use the wasp to kill pests more effectively." This is undoubtedly a good example of animal behavior research to solve practical problems.
