The German newspaper Le Monde reported recently that the graft was developed by scientists at the Retina Graft Company in Reutlingen. The microchip has a diameter of about 3 mm and has about 1500 pixels on it. Each pixel cell consists of two photocells, an amplifying circuit and a stimulating electrode. The photocell absorbs light that is incident on the eye and converts it into electrical energy. This energy is used to control the energy input from the outside, and the latter acts to stimulate healthy nerve cells on the retina with electrical signals. The nerve impulses emitted by these cells are transmitted to the brain by the optic nerve, which ultimately forms a visual impression there.
It is said that this microchip can be put into clinical use in a few years.
