Japan uses GM technology to cultivate high-cellulose eucalyptus

Japan’s Oji Paper Co. is trying to use GM technology to grow high-cellulose eucalyptus trees and plans to reach the level of farm cultivation after 3 years.
According to the information released by the company, the purpose of the new technology is to develop new varieties with a cellulose content 10% to 20% higher than the average eucalyptus, thus providing a large amount of cheap papermaking raw materials. The researchers first implanted the genes "TC1" and "ACW1" related to synthetic cellulose into Agrobacterium, and then used Agrobacterium to infect eucalyptus to increase the ability of Eucalyptus to synthesize cellulose.
The new varieties are currently in the greenhouse cultivation stage, and they still need to do analysis of genetic effects. The company plans to select genetically modified eucalyptus plants during the current year, and the second year will begin a cultivation trial on a closed farm and reach the average farm planting level in the third year.
According to reports, the company is also using transgenic technology to cultivate eucalyptus varieties with low lignin content.
