Pond cultivation of shrimp
Pond Requirements. A suitable pond should have a reliable water supply and efficient drainage system. The area should generally not exceed 4 acres, with a water depth ranging between 1 to 1.5 meters. The pond bottom should be free of excessive silt to ensure good water quality and easier maintenance.
Water Quality Conditions. Green shrimp are highly sensitive to toxic chemicals such as "6-66" and "enemy-killing." Therefore, the water used for aquaculture must be fresh, clean, and free from pollutants. Regular monitoring of water parameters like pH, ammonia, and dissolved oxygen is essential to maintain a healthy environment for the shrimp.
Clearing and Disinfecting the Pond. To ensure a pollution-free culture environment, it's recommended to use natural disinfectants like tea seed cakes or croton instead of synthetic chemicals like sodium pentachlorophenol. For croton treatment: If the pond has an average depth of about 10 cm, apply 5–7 kg of croton per acre. Crush the croton into a paste, mix it in a container, and add 100 grams of shochu or 750 grams of salt. Let it sit for 3 days, then dilute it with pond water and pour the mixture into the pond. After 10–15 days, gradually increase the water depth to about 1 meter before introducing the shrimp (after filtering with a fine mesh net). For tea seed cake: Keep the water at 0.5 meters, spread fresh tea seed cakes evenly across the pond to achieve a concentration of 1010–6–1510–6. After 15 days, raise the water level to 1 meter and introduce the shrimp fry.
Shrimp Stocking. Before stocking, apply 250–300 kg of organic fertilizer per acre to promote the growth of natural food organisms. Wait until a large number of these organisms appear before introducing the shrimp. Stock 60,000 to 100,000 shrimp per acre, ensuring they are uniform in size, healthy, disease-free, and have intact appendages. It's best to stock them early in the morning or late in the evening, and make sure the temperature difference between the transport water and pond water does not exceed 2°C.
Setting Shrimp Nests. Providing artificial shelters like mesh nets, poplar roots, bamboo sticks, or pine branches can help shrimp utilize the water column more effectively. Additionally, planting aquatic plants such as Vallisneria, black algae, or water hyacinth can improve the habitat. However, the coverage of these plants should not exceed one-third of the pond area to prevent overgrowth and poor water circulation.
Feeding Practices. Feed the shrimp twice daily—once in the morning and once in the evening. The total daily feed amount should not exceed 10% of the shrimp’s body weight. In the morning, feed in slightly deeper areas since shrimp avoid bright light. In the evening, feed in the shallows, and allocate about 70% of the daily feed to this session. Always ensure the feed is evenly distributed to avoid waste and maintain good water quality.
