The butterfly valve is a type of quarter-turn valve that uses a disc-shaped closure element, known as the butterfly plate, which rotates around its own axis within the valve body. This rotation allows the valve to open, close, or regulate the flow of media through the pipeline. When fully open, the disc typically occupies less than 90 degrees of movement, making it quick and efficient. However, the butterfly plate and stem are not self-locking, so a worm gear reducer is often added to the valve stem to provide locking capability and precise positioning. This not only enhances the valve’s operational performance but also allows for stable operation at any position. Industrial special butterfly valves are designed to withstand high temperatures and operate under high-pressure conditions. These valves often have large nominal diameters, with the valve body constructed from carbon steel. The sealing ring on the butterfly plate is typically made of a metal ring instead of a rubber one, ensuring durability in extreme environments. Large high-temperature butterfly valves are usually fabricated by welding steel plates and are commonly used in flue ducts and gas pipelines carrying high-temperature media. The advantages of butterfly valves include their ease of operation, rapid opening and closing, low fluid resistance, and suitability for frequent use. They are compact, lightweight, and can handle slurry or low-liquid content in pipelines. At low pressures, they can achieve good sealing performance, and their adjustable characteristics make them ideal for flow control. However, there are some disadvantages. Butterfly valves generally have limited operating pressure and temperature ranges, and their sealing performance may not be as effective as other types of valves. In terms of structure, butterfly valves can be categorized into different types such as offset disc, vertical disc, inclined disc, and lever-type butterfly valves. Based on the sealing mechanism, they are divided into two main types: soft-sealed and hard-sealed. Soft-sealed valves use a rubber ring for sealing, while hard-sealed valves employ a metal ring, offering better performance in high-temperature applications. Depending on the connection method, they can be classified as flanged butterfly valves or wafer-type butterfly valves. In terms of actuation, they can be manual, gear-driven, pneumatic, hydraulic, or electrically operated. Each type has its own application scope and benefits. When installing and maintaining a butterfly valve, certain precautions should be taken. First, ensure the valve is closed during installation. Second, determine the correct opening position based on the disc's rotation angle. If the valve has a bypass, open the bypass before starting. Always follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, and for heavy-duty valves, ensure a solid foundation is provided to support the weight and prevent misalignment.
