If you've been following along for a while, you probably know that my kids recently transitioned to sharing a room. With this new setup, we decided to give their combined space a fresh look—on a budget! Our inspiration began with a vision board we created, and key elements like these DIY pallet beds followed. While the full reveal is coming soon, I wanted to share one of my latest projects: the magnetic chalkboard! It's not only easy to create but also something my kids absolutely adore.

Initially, I had planned for a 6-foot-tall chalkboard, but after realizing sheet metal costs were higher than expected, I opted for a pre-cut piece measuring 2 feet wide by 4 feet tall. This size felt just right for the kids and provided enough stability for a freestanding piece.

To build this, you'll need a 2' x 4' sheet of sheet metal, a 2' x 4' sheet of lauan wood, strong adhesive (such as Liquid Nails), metal primer spray paint, chalkboard spray paint, 1" x 2" trim cut to fit (two pieces at 4 feet and two at 20 inches), and a few small screws. All materials were purchased from Lowe's and pre-measured before heading home.

First, Brayden helped me spray-paint the sheet metal. We started with a metal primer on a sunny day to ensure quick drying between coats. Once primed, we applied two layers of chalkboard paint.

Next, Daddy got involved, though mostly because I was using the pregnancy card to take a break and snap some photos.

We glued the sheet metal onto the lauan board, spray-painted side facing up. Around the edges of the sheet metal, we added more glue where the trim would go, then secured the trim in place. To reinforce the structure, we drilled a few holes through the trim and sheet metal, adding screws for extra stability.

Voila! Here’s the completed magnetic chalkboard—a solid, portable, and sturdy creation perfect for the kids’ room.

The kids love it, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. It’s a win-win situation!
