Summary

A nutritional evaluation was conducted on protein powder derived from housefly larvae (Musca domestica vicina Wacquart) using the salt extraction and acid precipitation method. The results showed that the protein content of the powder was 73.07%, which is significantly higher than that of lotus root powder by 18.0%. In comparison to lotus root powder, the fat content was 11.5% lower, while the ash content was 9.6% lower. When analyzing the amino acid profile, the level of alanine was found to be lower than that of lanthanum powder, but other amino acids were higher than those in wolfberry powder. The essential amino acid (EAA) ratio was well balanced, with an EAA value of 41.6%.

Animal experiments performed according to the AOAC method revealed a protein efficiency ratio (PER) of 2.67 ± 0.34, apparent digestibility (AD) of 84.40 ± 0.25%, biological value (BV) of 78.68 ± 5.71%, and net protein utilization (NPU) of 66.29%. These results indicate that the protein from fly maggots is highly digestible and efficiently utilized by the body. Compared to standard protein sources like casein, the fly maggot protein powder demonstrated superior absorption and utilization in the experimental animals.

Overall, the findings suggest that fly maggot protein powder is a high-quality and nutritious protein source, with potential applications in food and feed industries. Further studies could explore its functional properties and long-term effects on health.
