Summary A nutritional evaluation was conducted on protein powder derived from housefly larvae (Musca domestica vicina Wacquart) using a salt extraction and acid precipitation method. The results showed that the protein content of the powder reached 73.07%, which is significantly higher than that of lotus root powder by 18%. In comparison, the fat content was 23.01%, which is 11.5% higher, while the ash content was only 1.83%, 9.6% lower than that of lotus root powder. When analyzing the amino acid profile, the level of alanine in the fly maggot protein was slightly lower than that of lanthanum powder, but other amino acids were found to be higher compared to wolfberry powder. The essential amino acid (EAA) ratio was well balanced, with an EAA value of 41.6%, indicating a good nutritional quality. Animal experiments performed according to the AOAC method revealed a protein efficiency ratio (PER) of 2.67 ± 0.34, apparent digestibility (AD) of 84.40 ± 0.25%, biological value (BV) of 78.68 ± 5.71%, and net protein utilization (NPU) of 66.29 ± 4.19%. These values suggest that the protein from fly maggots is efficiently absorbed and utilized by the body, outperforming both standard protein powders and casein. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that fly maggot protein powder represents a high-quality protein source, offering promising potential for use in food or feed applications. Further research could explore its functional properties and possible industrial applications.
