Dairy dairy cows management technology
1. It is recommended to clean the water tank at least once a week to maintain normal water pressure and ensure sufficient water supply. You can use multiple water tanks simultaneously for better efficiency. The sink should be placed next to the feeding trough, not near the cow bed, to avoid contamination. After milking, cows should go to the play area, and a drinking water tank should be installed near the entrance, as cows need access to plenty of water after milking.
2. Feeders should be cleaned daily to prevent dirt buildup and ensure a smooth surface. Any damaged areas or pits in the feeders should be repaired immediately, and the bottom should remain flat for easy feeding. The height of the trough should be 9–13 cm higher than the cow’s front hoof to allow comfortable feeding. Clean and smooth feeders help dairy cows consume more feed efficiently.
3. The cow bed must always be clean, dry, and well-padded. When you squat down and feel the bed, there should be enough soft material underneath. If it feels uncomfortable or painful, it means the padding is insufficient. It is recommended to add 9–13 cm of sand or straw as bedding. Placing the mat on top helps prevent moisture and skin irritation. Keeping the litter and mat clean and dry not only ensures cow comfort but also reduces the risk of mastitis and improves milk quality.
4. Ammonia buildup in a poorly ventilated barn can lead to respiratory issues in cows. If you notice an odor, make sure to ventilate immediately. In a well-ventilated barn, the smell from urine dissipates quickly. A simple way to improve summer ventilation is to open one end of the barn and install an exhaust fan at the other end, creating a cross-flow of air through the entire space. Removing the cows’ exhaled air is crucial, as good ventilation also helps eliminate harmful pathogens.
By following these practices, farmers can significantly improve the health, comfort, and productivity of their dairy cows. This not only enhances animal welfare but also leads to better milk quality and higher yields.
