#PROJECTdecor:: DIY Corner Ladder Bookshelf

While my husband and I were elbow-deep in sawdust in the garage, working up a sweat sanding down rough-edged pallets for our kids' bed frames, we got sidetracked by a project I'd been daydreaming about for weeks. It was the old wooden ladder we'd picked up months ago from a guy's yard on Craigslist for a measly $10. I'm pretty sure it could've been free from some junk pile, but I hadn't found one until that moment. My husband reluctantly agreed to help me lug it home, and since then, it had been sitting untouched in the corner of the garage—until now. We finally decided to tackle it as part of my latest DIY adventure, #PROJECTdecor. This ladder had potential, though it was definitely showing its age. The paint was chipped and peeling, and the wood looked weathered—just the kind of rustic charm I love. We sanded off some of the flaking paint, being careful not to scrub it clean. I wanted to keep that lived-in, weathered look without making it look brand-new. Next, we measured the walls where we planned to mount it. After some careful calculations, we cut the ladder in half, leaving a bit more space on one side because the wall was slightly wider. We attached the bottom two L-brackets to the wall, then held the ladder in place to mark where the top brackets would go. With everything secured, we slid the ladder into position, leaving it 1.5 inches away from the wall and the corner to create a cozy reading nook vibe. It was simple, but effective. Once the ladder was firmly attached, I started decorating. I gathered a few books, small trinkets, and even some fresh greenery from my yard to add a touch of life to the shelves. It felt like magic watching the once-bare corner transform into something warm and inviting. We're absolutely thrilled with how it turned out. Not only does it serve as functional storage, but it also adds character to our living room. If you’ve got an old ladder lying around, consider giving it a second life.
