Summer pig raising measures

In the summer, the weather is extremely hot, with high temperatures that can be very stressful for pigs. Pigs have thick sebum and underdeveloped sweat glands, making it difficult for them to regulate body temperature effectively. As a result, they are prone to heat stress, which can lead to illness or even death. To ensure their health and productivity during the hottest months, it's essential to implement effective strategies that focus on cooling, feeding, and disease prevention. First, cooling is crucial. This involves both cooling the pig house and the pigs themselves. To reduce the temperature inside the pigsty, you can use shade structures such as temporary pergolas or plant vines to block direct sunlight. Additionally, spraying the area with cool water 2–4 times a day helps lower the temperature through evaporation. Inside the pig house, installing water tanks allows pigs to soak and cool down. Spraying the pigs with water during the hottest hours of the day—noon and afternoon—can also help them dissipate heat more efficiently. Second, feeding practices need to be adjusted. During the hottest parts of the day, pigs tend to eat less, so it’s best to feed them during cooler times. Offer large amounts of food in the evening before they rest, as pigs can sleep up to 18 hours a day, which aids in weight gain. You can divide feeding into three nighttime sessions: at 7 PM, 11 PM, and 4 AM. During the day, feed them at 10 AM and 2 PM. It's also important to provide saltwater and juicy green feed to maintain hydration. The feeding amounts vary depending on the pig’s weight: under 35 kg, 2 kg of feed and 10 liters of saline; between 35–60 kg, 2.75 kg of feed and 15 liters of saline; over 60 kg, 3.5 kg of feed and 17.5 liters of saline. Third, disease prevention is vital. High temperatures can weaken a pig's immune system, making them more susceptible to diseases like swine fever, Eperythrozoonosis, and streptococcal infections. Maintaining cleanliness in the pigsty is key—regularly cleaning the area and removing waste prevents the buildup of harmful bacteria. Keeping the environment dry and well-ventilated helps reduce the risk of disease. Using mosquito repellents or burning insect coils can also help control pests that may spread illness. By combining these strategies, farmers can improve pig health, reduce losses, and maximize economic returns during the summer season.
