Identification of male and female chicks

The method of identifying the sex of male chicks typically involves observing physical characteristics such as a larger head, bigger and rounder eyes, prominent eyeballs, and eyes that are long and slightly hooked in shape. In contrast, the mother and female chicks have smaller heads, lighter bodies, and oval-shaped eyes that are shorter and more rounded. However, this method can be quite challenging for inexperienced individuals, especially when dealing with eggs of varying sizes, which may result in a higher number of chicks hatching. In terms of behavior, younger male chicks tend to be more active, bold, and aggressive, while the mother and female chicks are generally calmer and less energetic. Male chicks are often more sensitive and move more slowly, whereas females tend to be more docile. Additionally, males usually take larger steps, while females tend to have shorter, more cautious movements. When scratching the ground, male chicks often leave their toes spread out horizontally, while females typically keep their toes more together. Feather development is another key indicator. Male chicks begin to grow feathers on their chest and shoulders earlier than females. By the fourth day after hatching, male chicks already show feather growth in these areas, while females typically start growing feathers on the seventh day. For anal examination, it's possible to determine the sex of a chick 12 to 24 hours after hatching by gently opening the cloaca. The anal sphincter in males is more developed, tighter, and shows stronger contractions. When the cloaca is gently turned, a male chick will display rapid and strong blinking, while females tend to blink more slowly, with longer pauses between contractions. Inside the cloaca, there’s a small, needle-like granular protrusion surrounded by folds, shaped like an "eight." In male chicks, the reproductive structures are well-developed, round, and elastic, with a smooth and defined appearance. In females, these structures are either completely absent or appear wrinkled and underdeveloped. This method is highly accurate but requires careful handling and some experience to perform correctly.
