How to feed just weaned piglets

The feeding of newly weaned piglets is a highly technical task, and the most important factor is ensuring the right amount of feed is provided. Both overfeeding and underfeeding can have negative impacts on their growth and development. Overfeeding may lead to digestive issues such as indigestion and diarrhea, while underfeeding can cause stress due to hunger, which hinders healthy growth. To ensure proper feeding, it's essential to follow the "four inducements and three observations" method. **Four Inducements** 1. **Free-Feeding Method**: Place some pellets in areas where piglets frequently move. The crisp and tasty pellets are very appealing to them. Alternatively, sprinkle finely chopped green leaves for sows to feed the piglets. This training should be done 4–5 times a day, and piglets usually learn to eat within 4–5 days. 2. **Artificial Feeding**: When the piglet is asleep, use a small iron spoon or your hands to feed them directly. This method is effective and should be done 3–5 times daily. 3. **Group Feeding**: Place smaller and larger piglets together in the same feeding area. Once the bigger piglets start eating, the younger ones often follow due to their natural instinct to mimic others. This helps speed up the learning process. 4. **Sweet Food Encouragement**: Piglets have a preference for sweet tastes. Adding a small amount of white sugar or brown sugar to the feed can make it more attractive. You can also mix in some fried corn or soybeans to encourage free feeding. **Three Observations** 1. **Monitor Feeding Behavior**: After feeding, check the feed intake and look for leftovers in the trough. If there’s only a little froth with no remaining feed, the amount is just right. If the trough is clean and moist, it suggests the feed was insufficient, so increase the quantity next time. If there’s leftover feed, reduce the amount accordingly. 2. **Check Feces Condition**: Observe the piglets’ feces closely. Within the first three days after weaning, their stools should transition from yellow to brown. If the feces are soft but normal in color, no change is needed. If you see undigested feed particles, it may indicate overfeeding, so reduce the amount by about 20%. If the feces are pasty, light gray, or contain undigested material, this could signal an outbreak of diarrhea, and immediate action should be taken. 3. **Observe Activity Levels**: Watch the piglets’ behavior to determine if they are hungry or not. If they gather around the feeder and cry loudly, they may need more food. If they quickly consume the feed and don’t return to the nest, it might mean they’re still hungry. On the other hand, if they don’t respond much and show weak calls, they may not be hungry and require less feed. By following these methods, farmers can effectively manage the feeding of weaned piglets, ensuring optimal health and growth.
