Muddy Summer Management Focus

Aquatic plants are commonly planted in ponds to provide shade and enhance water quality. These plants typically cover about one-third of the pond's surface area. Suitable species include lotus root, white water lily, arrowhead, water spinach, water hyacinth, water peanut, and others. Not only do they help in reducing water temperature, but they also contribute to oxygenation and nutrient balance in the aquatic environment. During mid-summer, loaches grow rapidly and have a high appetite. The daily feed quantity should be around 5% to 8% of the total weight of the loaches in the pond. It’s important to maintain consistent feeding schedules to support their growth and health. Water temperature plays a crucial role in loach farming. Ideal temperatures range between 22°C and 28°C. If the temperature exceeds 30°C, immediate action is needed. One effective method is to increase the water depth to about 0.8 to 1 meter, which helps regulate temperature. Additionally, regularly changing the water with a slow, continuous flow can also lower the water temperature and improve overall conditions. Disease outbreaks are most common during the summer, especially for mud loaches. Common diseases include gill rot, fungal infections, and enteritis. To prevent these, it’s recommended to apply a 110-6 bleach solution throughout the pond. Alternatively, crushed leeks and garlic can be mixed into the feed to boost immunity. Allicin can also be added to the feed once daily for three consecutive days. Another preventive measure is to sprinkle 12.5 to 15 kg of quicklime per acre of water at Quanchipu to disinfect and improve water quality. Proper management of aquatic plants, feeding practices, water temperature, and disease prevention are all essential for successful loach farming. By maintaining a balanced and clean environment, farmers can ensure better growth rates and higher survival of their loaches.
