Poinsettia

Poinsettia, commonly known as the Christmas flower, originates from Mexico. During the winter season, its vibrant bracts are eye-catching and captivating. In South America, it grows as a shrub and is sometimes referred to as Mexican leaves. ● Variety Poinsettias are evergreen shrubs with upright stems that exude a milky sap. The leaves are alternate, ovate-elliptic in shape, with lower leaves being green and upper ones forming colorful bracts, often red. The inflorescence is terminal. Popular varieties include 'Fistiva' and 'Pito' in red, 'Success' and 'Piece Echo', 'Lillo' in yellow-white, 'Pearl' for yellow-white, 'Luti' for yellow, 'Eck' for white, and 'Rosie' for pink. ● Propagation From April to May, select healthy and vigorous branches about 10 cm long. After cutting, wash away the milky sap that oozes out, let them dry, and then place them in a warm environment at 22–25°C. Rooting typically takes 4 to 18 days, depending on conditions. ● Cultivation Choose well-drained, slightly acidic soil and a sunny location. During the growing season, control plant height using pruning techniques. Pinching back is usually done in late June and mid-August, leaving 3–5 branches per pot. Fertilize every two weeks, adding calcium and magnesium to enhance the color of the bracts. If you provide 8 hours of short-day treatment daily, the bracts will turn red more quickly. ● Usage Poinsettia is a key potted and cut flower during the winter, widely used for home decoration and public spaces. It is often paired with pine cones, real cypresses, and dianthus to create a strong holiday atmosphere. It is a popular Christmas gift in Europe, America, and Japan. When three groups of poinsettias are used as the main flowers, combined with wisteria, they can beautifully create a festive scene, symbolizing a red dragonfly.
