The After

So, before the big weekend where all the littles were getting ready to strut their stuff down the runway for Aliyah's Fifth Birthday (which I promise I'll write more about soon), I decided to take my little girl for a proper hair day at a real salon. Not one of those fun fairs with the bright yellow chairs and cartoon characters everywhere. No, this was the kind of place where the ceramic shampoo bowls feel like they're giving you a mini spa treatment, and they actually had to stack cushions on the recliner just so she could comfortably rest her tiny head. The kind of place where they play smooth jazz or some chill playlist in the background, and they even offer you a drink—like you're some VIP client. People there were talking about everything under the sun, from who's dating whom to the latest drama on "Real Housewives," but none of that mattered to my usually chatty daughter.

She barely said a word the entire time we were there. I mean, she'd nod when I asked if she liked it or give me a shy smile whenever I tried to strike up a conversation. But words? Nope. Not a single sound escaped her lips as she sat there in that fancy swivel chair.

It wasn't until we were back in the car, on our way home, that the floodgates opened. And oh boy, did they open wide! As soon as we pulled away, she started gushing about how magical her hair looked. "Mommy, my hair is like magic! It's almost black when it's wet, and then it turns into this light blonde color when it's dry!" I could tell she loved it—she couldn't stop talking about it.

Now, before we went in, I gave the stylist very specific instructions: no cutting her hair short because she's still trying to grow it out, and to make sure I got plenty of videos and pictures so she could show her friends later. And guess what? I did exactly that. In fact, I ended up taking way too many photos—some of them turned out great, though.

It's moments like these that really remind me how fast she's growing up. She's no longer the little toddler I used to hold onto tightly; now she's becoming this confident, independent little person who knows exactly what she likes—and isn't afraid to express it.

Anyway, enough about the hair day. There's still so much more to share about the birthday bash coming up next week. Stay tuned!
