Garlic rust characteristics and control methods

1. The disease primarily affects the leaves and pseudostems of the plant. At the early stage, small, elongated yellow spots appear on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, a round or slightly raised mass of moldy spores develops under the epidermis. When the outer layer ruptures, orange-yellow powdery spores—known as summer spores—are released. A yellow halo usually surrounds the lesion. Over time, these lesions merge and spread across the entire leaf, causing it to dry out prematurely and leading to early plant death. The pathogen can also survive in leeks, onions, and other related crops. The disease tends to occur more frequently during cold, humid conditions.

2. Prevention and control measures include: 1) selecting rust-resistant varieties, such as purple-skinned garlic, which shows higher resistance. 2) Avoiding the cultivation of onions and garlic together, and maintaining garden hygiene to reduce initial infection sources. 3) Planting at the appropriate time, applying fertilizers reasonably, and limiting water usage to prevent overwatering and waterlogging. 4) In years with heavy rainfall, regular field inspections are essential to detect early signs of the disease and apply preventive sprays promptly. During the early stages of infection, you can use 15% triadimefon wettable powder diluted at 1500 times, or a mixture of 70% mancozeb wettable powder at 1000 times and 15% triadimefon wettable powder at 200 times. It's important to stop all applications 20 days before harvest to ensure safe consumption.

By following these practices, farmers can significantly reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and maintain healthier crop growth. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are key to effective disease management. Additionally, rotating crops and using clean planting materials can further help in reducing the spread of the pathogen. Always follow the recommended application rates and safety guidelines when using any chemical treatments.
