The use of home soil preservation techniques can extend the market availability of tomatoes by 1–2 months, offering a cost-effective and efficient way to boost income with minimal investment and quick returns. This method is gaining popularity among small-scale farmers who want to maximize profits while reducing post-harvest losses. One effective technique is the basket storage method. Choose a clean, sturdy basket or bamboo container with a volume of approximately 0.6–0.8 cubic meters. Line the inside and bottom with plastic film to prevent moisture loss and ensure proper ventilation. Drill 8–10 holes, each about 3 cm in diameter, along the sides of the basket for air circulation. Select firm, green-ripe tomatoes that are free from pests and diseases. Gently place them into the basket, cover the top with a plastic sheet, and wrap it tightly with wet sacks. Store the baskets in a cellar or warehouse where the temperature remains between 8–12°C. During colder weather, cover the entrance with straw or curtains to maintain warmth. This method can keep tomatoes fresh for 40–60 days, depending on environmental conditions. Another option is the pool storage method. Use the walls of an earth room or a kiln, particularly against the north side for natural insulation. Build a one-meter-high pool using bricks, with dimensions based on the amount of tomatoes to be stored. After sterilizing the area with a 20% bleach solution, add a 4 cm layer of fine sand at the bottom. Select high-quality, non-damaged tomatoes that are still green but fully matured. Place them in layers, alternating with damp sand and covering each layer with wet sacks to maintain humidity. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can accelerate spoilage. This method allows tomatoes to stay fresh for about two weeks. For greenhouse owners, the shed storage method is ideal. Harvest the green-ripe tomatoes and place them on the ridge of the greenhouse. Secure a small arch-shaped shed over the tomatoes to provide shelter. In the early stages, remove any condensation that forms on the shed’s surface to prevent excess moisture. As temperatures drop, cover the shed with paper or straw curtains during the night to retain heat and moisture. This approach can preserve tomatoes for up to 40 days. It's crucial to monitor the stored tomatoes regularly—discard any that start to turn red or show signs of rot to prevent contamination of the entire batch. By using these simple yet effective storage methods, farmers can significantly improve their tomato preservation, reduce waste, and increase their overall profitability. Each technique has its own advantages, so choosing the right one depends on available resources, climate, and storage space. With careful management, home soil preservation can become a reliable and profitable strategy for small-scale growers.
