Oral implant technology has gradually become a new choice for patients with tooth defects

Release date: 2006-12-07

Oral implant technology is increasingly becoming a popular choice for individuals with missing teeth. This trend was highlighted during the first Asia-Pacific Oral Implant Conference held in Shanghai, organized by the International Dental Planting Organization. As the global population ages and medical expertise improves, dental implants are now seen as a preferred solution for patients suffering from tooth loss.
A dental implant involves surgically placing an artificial root into the jawbone. After a healing period, the implant fuses with the bone, and a crown or denture is attached on top. Currently, this advanced procedure is mainly available in specialized departments of major hospitals in big cities across China.
Dr. Zhang Zhiyong, head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Ninth People’s Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiaotong University, emphasized the advantages of implants over traditional methods. Unlike conventional restorations, implants don’t require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth, preserving natural tooth structure. They also offer functionality and aesthetics similar to real teeth, making them suitable for single or multiple tooth replacements, as well as full dentures. Studies show that over 90% of implants remain functional for more than 15 years.
Some people worry about the pain involved in the procedure. However, experts explain that the discomfort is comparable to a regular tooth extraction, with minimal trauma. That said, there are specific criteria for eligibility—patients must have fully developed jaws, good overall health, and sufficient bone density at the implant site. Like natural teeth, implants need proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups to maintain their longevity.
As people grow older, many lose all their natural teeth, which can affect their ability to eat, speak clearly, and feel confident. While technological advancements have made implants more accessible, cost remains a significant barrier for many. In cities like Beijing and Shanghai, the price for a single implant ranges from 8,000 to 10,000 yuan. Despite this, the long-term benefits and quality of life improvements make it a compelling option for those who can afford it.
