Greenhouse tomato watering trick

Tomatoes are known for their high water content and large volume. Based on practical experience, the following watering techniques are recommended for greenhouse-grown tomatoes:

First, it's essential to water according to the different growth stages of the plant. In general, after planting, you should wait 3 to 5 days before giving the initial irrigation. Then, continue with a light watering every 7 to 10 days until the first fruit begins to set. Once the first fruit reaches the size of an egg yolk, another round of watering is needed. During the early growth stage, transpiration is low, fewer fruits are present, and ventilation is limited, so one small watering every 7 to 10 days is usually sufficient. As the plants grow and more fruits develop, both transpiration and ventilation increase, so the interval between waterings should be shortened, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Watering every 1 to 5 days is common during this period. During the fruiting stage, it’s important to maintain consistent moisture in the soil to help increase fruit weight and quality.

Second, adjust your watering schedule based on the type of greenhouse and season. In winter greenhouses, where tomatoes are typically planted at the end of October, it's best to avoid watering until the first fruit sets. After that, you can cover the soil with mulch to retain moisture. If necessary, you can give a small amount of water under the mulch to prevent temperature drops. As the weather warms up, increase the water supply to meet the growing needs of the fruits. For early spring greenhouse tomatoes, timely watering is crucial to support healthy growth and development.

Third, observe the plant's appearance to determine its water needs. A well-watered tomato plant will have dark green, shiny, flat leaves without curling or wilting. If the leaves appear wilted during sunny days or the heart of the plant is shrinking, it may be a sign of water stress, and you should water immediately. On the other hand, if the leaves are overly large, thin, or show excessive water loss, it could indicate overwatering. Balancing the water supply is key to maintaining plant health and productivity.

Fourth, choose the right time for watering. It's best to water on sunny days, and after watering, ensure proper ventilation to reduce humidity. Avoid watering in the afternoon, evening, or on rainy days, as this can lead to high humidity levels inside the greenhouse, increasing the risk of diseases like downy mildew. Also, avoid watering at noon when temperatures are highest, as this can negatively affect root function. In hot weather, you can extend the ventilation time in the greenhouse to cool down the environment and water when it's cooler.

Fifth, water before harvesting. This helps improve the fruit's quality and commercial value by ensuring they are well-hydrated and firm. Proper watering throughout the entire growth cycle plays a critical role in producing healthy, high-quality tomatoes in a greenhouse setting.
