The breeding technology of stone frogs
When the spring water temperature rises above 15°C, stone frogs initiate their breeding season. Under standard management practices, frogs weighing over 200 grams can spawn twice a year, typically in April-May and July-August. Each spawning event can produce between 1,000 to 2,000 egg capsules. The quantity of eggs laid depends on factors such as the frog's size, water temperature, and the development of their gonads. These eggs are sticky and tend to adhere to the walls of stones or pools. After 10 to 15 days, the eggs hatch into tadpoles.
During the breeding season from April to September, mating usually occurs between 9 PM and 3 AM. Breeding pairs should consist of frogs weighing at least 200 grams, and they are placed in designated spawning pools. The recommended stocking density is 1 to 2 pairs per square meter, with a female-to-male ratio of 1.5:1. During mating, the male releases sperm while the female lays her eggs. Once the eggs are moved to the hatching pond, it’s essential to maintain clean water, with a temperature not exceeding 30°C, and avoid overcrowding. The ideal water temperature for hatching is between 26°C and 32°C. From fertilization to hatching, the process usually takes 240 to 290 hours. The incubation period is significantly influenced by water temperature—higher temperatures shorten the time, while lower temperatures extend it. The fertilization rate is approximately 88%, and the hatching rate is around 72%.
Newly hatched tadpoles rely on their yolk sac for nutrition for about 4 to 5 days. Once the yolk sac is fully absorbed, they begin feeding. It is best to feed them manually, preferably in the afternoon. High-protein foods like egg yolk, soy milk, and fish meal can be used to support their growth. The water in Dianchi Lake must remain fresh and clean. Since the tadpoles are sensitive, poor water quality—such as foul-smelling or bubbling water—can lead to infections and high mortality. Therefore, maintaining clean and well-oxygenated water is crucial for their survival and healthy development.
