The Benefits of Fermenting Straw for Sheep Feed

Start by selecting dry straw that has not been affected by mold. Cut the straw into pieces approximately 1 cm in length to improve fermentation efficiency. A starter culture, such as Kumot Straw Starter, is essential for this process. For every 500 kg of straw, use about 1 kg of the starter. First, dissolve the starter in warm water (between 30-35°C), and mix it thoroughly. In summer, cold water can be used if necessary. Then, combine the mixture with the prepared straw material.

The moisture content should be carefully controlled at around 60-70%. To check if the moisture level is correct, take a handful of the material and squeeze it. If you see water on your fingertips but it doesn’t drip, you’re good. When you open your hand, the material should form a loose clump. The general ratio of straw to water is about 1:1.5.

Once mixed, pile the straw into a heap that is 40-50 cm high, with an appropriate length and width. Place a thermometer inside the pile and cover it with a heat-retaining and moisture-preserving material, such as a plastic sheet or burlap. The golden bait straw starter works quickly, so in summer, fermentation usually takes 6-8 hours. However, during winter when the room temperature is above 15°C, the process may take 16-24 hours. If the temperature drops below 15°C, try to raise it using insulation or other heating methods to speed up the process.

When the temperature inside the pile reaches 40°C, it’s time to turn the pile over. Be careful not to let the temperature exceed 45°C, as this could lead to over-fermentation and reduce the quality of the feed. It’s recommended to turn the pile 1-2 times throughout the entire fermentation process.

The fermentation is complete when the straw begins to turn a yellowish color and emits a pleasant, slightly sour aroma. At this point, remove the covering and spread out the straw to cool it down. This prevents further fermentation and ensures the feed remains stable and safe for sheep consumption.

This method not only improves the nutritional value of the straw but also makes it more digestible for sheep, helping to enhance their overall health and productivity. By following these steps, farmers can efficiently convert low-quality straw into high-quality animal feed, making better use of available resources.
