Chiba

Chiba, also known as *Rhaphidophora tetrasperma*, is a versatile evergreen perennial belonging to the Polygonaceae family. This plant typically grows in clusters or cascades, making it ideal for hanging baskets or placed on shelves, cabinets, or other elevated surfaces. Its slender, red-brown stems and heart-shaped or round leaves create a lush, flowing appearance that adds a natural, green touch to any space. The plant's overall form, with its gracefully drooping branches and foliage, makes it look like a living green ball, enhancing its ornamental appeal. Native to New Zealand, Chiba thrives in warm and humid conditions, but it is adaptable and can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. It has good cold tolerance, able to survive temperatures around 0°C during winter, though it should be protected from direct frost. During colder months, reduce watering to prevent root rot, which can occur if the roots remain waterlogged for extended periods. In the growing season, keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, as dry conditions may cause leaf drop. Fertilize every four weeks with a diluted liquid fertilizer or a specialized foliage plant formula to promote healthy growth. Ensure proper air circulation, especially in summer, and provide some shade to avoid sunburn. Repot the plant annually in spring using a well-draining, nutrient-rich sandy soil mixed with organic humus. Prune the plant during the growing season to remove long, dense shoots and old branches, encouraging new growth and maintaining a compact, bushy shape. Chiba grows quickly, so regular pruning is essential to maintain its desired form. Remove any branches that disrupt the plant’s symmetry to keep it looking neat and full. Propagation is easy through stem cuttings taken during the growing season, ideally after pruning in spring. Avoid taking cuttings during the extreme heat of summer or the cold of winter, as this can hinder rooting success. With proper care, Chiba is a low-maintenance, attractive plant that brings life and color to indoor spaces.
