Biotech Launches Starch Type Cigarette Filter

According to the Tobacco Business News, a researcher who compiled a biotechnology company jointly owned by Stanelco and SP Metal, is investigating cigarette filters made from starch, a natural mixture found in potatoes and rice. Starch can be broken down by organisms and can be made into compost. Staneco, which holds starch materials for filter fibers and international patents for these as cigarette filters, is currently replacing cellulose acetate-based filters for negotiations with cigarette manufacturers in Europe, the United States, and Asia. Starch-based filter fibers are much cheaper than cellulose acetate-based filters (30-50% cheaper at the current bulk price).
