Let the beans sit

Bean cultivation can be quite challenging for many growers, especially when it comes to managing growth stages and ensuring proper development. Many farmers struggle with issues like poor germination, excessive vine growth, or even failure to set flowers. Why does this happen? Experts from Shouguang City in Shandong Province have analyzed the causes and provided practical recommendations to help improve bean production. First, it's essential to maintain the right planting density during the early growth stage when the seedlings have just developed their first true leaves. The ideal spacing for beans is typically 60 cm between rows for small plants, 80 cm for larger ones, and 1.8 to 2 meters between plants. The higher the row height, the wider the spacing should be—around 45 cm apart, with two plants per spot. If the density is too high, the plants may grow excessively and become difficult to manage. Second, temperature control plays a crucial role in successful bean cultivation. Beans prefer a daytime temperature of 20°C to 25°C, with a night temperature around 18°C. During the flowering stage, maintaining a temperature difference between day and night is important. The maximum daytime temperature should not exceed 30°C, and nighttime temperatures should stay below 18°C. Growers should adjust their harvest timing accordingly, especially as temperatures rise. The ideal temperature for flowering is around 17°C, so monitoring and adjusting the timing of harvesting is key to ensuring good flower set. Third, light conditions are also vital, especially for greenhouse-grown beans. While they don’t require strict light hours, they do need sufficient light intensity, particularly during flowering and fruit setting. Insufficient light can lead to poor flower development and reduced yields. Fourth, soil moisture and nutrient management must be carefully balanced. Watering should be adjusted based on local conditions and the growth stage. There are three critical watering times during the growing season: the first after planting, which should be thorough; the second when the vines reach about 60 cm in height; and the third before the first flowering, combined with foliar sprays to protect flowers and promote fruit set. Avoid watering during the flowering period, as this can reduce yield. After the flowers set, a light watering helps the pods develop properly. Also, avoid overusing nitrogen fertilizer, as it can cause excessive vine growth and delay flowering. Instead, increase phosphorus to support root nodule formation and improve nitrogen fixation. By following these guidelines, growers can significantly improve the success of their bean crops and achieve better yields.
