How to maintain knowledge after new agricultural machinery
When users purchase a new machine, they often use it only during specific seasons. Once the season ends, the machine may sit idle for long periods, exposed to the elements—sun, rain, and humidity. This can lead to serious mechanical issues, such as rusting of critical components like cylinders, piston rings, valves, valve seats, and conduits. The damage can be costly and time-consuming to repair. To prevent this, proper long-term storage maintenance is essential. Here are the key steps you should follow:
First, thoroughly clean the machine’s exterior, including any attached agricultural equipment. Make sure there is no dirt or debris left that could cause corrosion over time. Store the machine in a dry and well-ventilated area to minimize moisture exposure. Next, drain all cooling water from the air pipes, tanks, and other reservoirs to prevent internal rusting.
Start the engine for about 20 seconds to help evaporate any remaining moisture inside the engine. Then, manually turn the crankshaft to position the machine at the beginning of the compression stroke. At this point, both the intake and exhaust valves will be closed, and the high-pressure fuel pump will not be engaged. Keep the machine in this position and cover the air intake and exhaust ports with protective tape or covers to keep out dust, insects, and other contaminants.
Apply a thin layer of fresh engine oil to all parts of the machine that are prone to rust, such as moving joints, metal surfaces, and internal components. Every two months, remove the covers from the intake and exhaust ports, start the machine for more than 10 seconds (without adding coolant), return it to its original parking position, and re-cover the ports. This helps circulate the oil and keeps the internal components lubricated.
For machines like threshers, pumps, and grinders, clean the exterior thoroughly and apply a good layer of anti-rust oil to areas that are susceptible to corrosion. Cover the inlet and outlet ports with caps or covers to prevent foreign objects from entering. For pumps specifically, make sure to completely drain the water from the pump housing to avoid freezing and internal damage during cold weather.
By following these simple but crucial steps, you can significantly extend the life of your machinery and ensure it remains in good working condition for future use. Proper storage not only saves money on repairs but also ensures that your equipment is ready when you need it most.
