Potato potato residue can make protein feed

Recently, researchers from Harbin Institute of Technology have made significant progress in developing single-cell protein (SCP) feed from spent potato residues. Their work not only involved identifying the most effective microbial strain combinations for SCP production but also established a full-scale production process tailored for this purpose. A key innovation was the use of liquid potato residue—specifically, the juice obtained during starch extraction—as a nutrient-rich medium for microbial fermentation, a method that has been successfully applied both domestically and internationally. China produces over 7 million tons of potatoes annually, with more than 340 million tons of starch processing waste generated each year. These potato residues are rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, and crude protein, containing a well-balanced amino acid profile. The crude protein content in the resulting microbial biomass can reach up to 40-50%, making it highly beneficial for livestock and poultry growth. Its high biological value makes it a promising alternative to plant-based protein sources. However, due to the lack of efficient treatment technologies, a large portion of these residues remains underutilized. This not only leads to resource wastage but also contributes to environmental pollution through the discharge of wastewater from starch processing. In 2004, Professor Yang Qian from the Institute of Biological Engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology, supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Science and Technology Support Program, led a research team to explore the potential of using potato residues for SCP production. They used yeast and other fungal strains to screen for high-efficiency SCP-producing microorganisms. Through extensive trials, they identified eight promising strains and optimized the fermentation conditions. This led to the development of a complete production process, which was thoroughly tested by authoritative institutions, laying a solid foundation for commercialization. The research has already resulted in two national invention patents, and the team has signed collaboration agreements with several major potato processing companies. With growing interest and support, the industrial application of this technology looks very promising, offering a sustainable solution to both waste management and the demand for high-quality protein feed.
