Jujube summer cutting method
Traditional jujube garden management tends to be more extensive, often without summer pruning. This leads to disorganized tree structures, with narrow angles between the main branches. Although the trees may appear tall, poor air circulation and light penetration result in low yields and subpar fruit quality. Implementing summer pruning not only improves ventilation and light exposure but also helps regulate the tree’s nutrition, boosting fruit set and enhancing the quality of fresh dates.
Summer pruning should be done when the jujube's terminal growth slows down, typically around mid-June. Pruning too early can stimulate the growth of unwanted secondary shoots, which interfere with fruit setting. On the other hand, pruning too late may lead to excessive nutrient consumption, reducing the tree’s ability to produce fruit effectively, especially in southern regions where this can negatively impact the second fruiting cycle.
When performing summer pruning, it is best to combine thinning with selective cutting. The key principles for jujube tree pruning include: extending strong backbone branches, shortening weak ones, cultivating robust branches, and utilizing long branches effectively. This approach ensures a balanced structure that supports better fruit production.
Thinning involves removing poorly positioned, crowded, or leggy branches. It is recommended to leave one new jujube head every 50 centimeters to encourage the development of fruit-bearing branches, which supports secondary fruiting. Long shoots should be pruned selectively, allowing new growth from short cuts to develop into productive branches. Strong, long jujube heads should be left unpruned so they can extend the main branches and lateral branches, helping to expand the canopy and increase fruiting areas.
It’s also important to remove buds that sprout on the main trunk and any unwanted shoots that appear. Topping the jujube head involves cutting off the top buds to control vertical growth and promote the development of secondary branches, which increases the number of fruiting sites. The number of secondary branches left depends on the available space—five to six in larger areas, three to four in smaller ones. This helps boost fruiting capacity and even creates conditions for a second harvest.
If the tree has an uneven crown, lacks branches, or has limited space, you can train long internal branches by gently pulling them out to fill gaps and expand the fruiting area. This technique helps create a more balanced and productive tree structure over time.
