Midsummer "skillfully" meat geese to make money
In the summer, many people think it's not worth raising geese because of the heat, but in Laohekou City, Hubei Province—known as the hometown of white geese—local farmers have developed effective methods to raise meat and goslings during the hot season. They manage to rear goslings in just 80 days, reaching weights of 4 to 5 kilograms before selling them.
During the summer, it's crucial to maintain proper density when raising meat geese. Only 5 to 7 geese should be kept per square meter. Shaded areas must be provided, either by building shelters or planting vines like grapes or gourds to offer natural cooling.
Newly hatched goslings can be given a special solution: 0.05% potassium permanganate water mixed with 5 ml of vitamin C, 6 ml of vitamin B, 5 grams of glucose, and 3 grams of brown sugar. This is given three times a day to help clean their intestines. After that, they can be offered fresh leaves to eat by hand. When more than 70% of the goslings start competing for food, spread the leaves on a clean mat or plastic sheet and let them feed freely. Feed every two hours. For the first two to four days, rice balls soaked in water are introduced, fed 4 to 5 times daily, including one time at night. From day five to ten, feed 6 to 8 times a day, with two nighttime meals. From day 11 to 20, switch to compound feed, feeding 5 to 6 times a day, with two nighttime meals and some grazing time. The feed formula includes corn (50%), fish meal (7%), peanut bran (10%), rice bran (20%), Tonguan (10%), auxin (1%), antibiotics and multivitamins (0.5%), and shell powder, bone meal, and salt each at 0.5%.
From day 21 to 30, gradually increase the grain content, such as wheat, and slowly transition to dry feed. Feed 3 to 4 times a day, with extended grazing periods.
Once the geese are over 30 days old and before their main wings grow, they are allowed to graze and are given appropriate feed. Before harvesting, they are bathed, rested outside, and then brought back into the shed. The feed formula includes corn (20%), fish meal (4%), peanut bran (4%), rice bran (10%), unbound quail (60%), auxin and antibiotics (1%), and shell powder (1%). The mix is combined with green materials at a 2:8 ratio (dry to wet). Water tanks and drinking fountains should always be full so geese can eat and drink freely at any time.
For the final stage, from day 20 to 30, a high-energy, low-protein diet is used to fatten the geese. The formula includes corn (40%), rice (15%), wheat bran (20%), rice bran (10%), dried vegetables (10%), fish meal (3.5%), bone meal (1%), and salt (0.5%). For every 100 kg of feed, add 19g of manganese sulfate, 17g of zinc sulfate, 12g of ferrous sulfate, 2g of copper sulfate, and 0.1g of potassium iodide. Mix and feed 4 to 5 times a day, once at night, while limiting the amount of feed and ensuring access to plenty of water. Once the geese reach 4.5 to 5 kg, they are ready for market.
It's important to control diseases during the summer. Before placing geese in the shed, disinfect with 2% formalin or lime water. Newly hatched goslings should be inoculated with anti-serum at 0.02 ml. At 30 days old, inject 1.5 ml of cholera vaccine intramuscularly. Disinfect feeding utensils every 3–5 days using 5% quicklime. Apply 1% bleaching powder or 2% grass-alkali water every 7–10 days in the pens and outdoor areas to prevent disease outbreaks. These measures help ensure healthy, fast-growing geese even in the hottest months.
