American Redfish Seed Breeding Technique

Breeding of American redfish seedlings is typically carried out in large outdoor ponds. The fry cultivation process begins with nursery ponds that range in size from 3/15 to 12/15 hectares, with a water depth of 0.9 to 1.2 meters. A small fishing pit is usually placed at the bottom of the pond for easier harvesting. The ideal salinity for aquaculture is between 1% and 4.5%, with 3% being the most suitable. Juvenile fish are primarily fed zooplankton such as rotifers and copepods. It's important to regularly monitor the composition of the bait communities to understand feeding patterns and ensure that both the species and quantity of food are adequate. Fertilization can be done using either inorganic or organic fertilizers, with the amount depending on factors like location, salinity, temperature, season, and nutrient levels in the water. The stocking density for juvenile fish is around 50,000 per 1/15 hectare, with an expected survival rate of about 60%. After stocking, the pond is fertilized every five days until day 20. On day 20, a high-protein powdered feed (40–50% protein) is introduced at a rate of 0.9 kg per 1/15 hectare per day, divided into two feedings. By day 26, 10% of the powder is replaced with crushed feed to help juveniles transition to floating diets. The replacement rate increases by 10% daily until day 35, when the feed is fully switched to crushed material. By day 30, the fish are ready to be moved to separate grow-out ponds, with fry sizes reaching approximately 25 mm. For larger-scale breeding, American redfish are raised from fingerlings measuring 2.5 to 5 cm up to marketable sizes of 20 to 25 cm. This helps avoid sudden temperature drops that could cause mass mortality. Large fingerlings are more efficient, as they can reach commercial size within one production cycle. The process includes an indoor wintering phase and feeding with pelleted food to support healthy growth.
