China successfully developed the world's first high-compensation depth living human retinal imaging system

On June 30, 2008, a groundbreaking achievement was made in the field of medical imaging. China successfully developed the world's first high-compensation depth living human retinal imaging system—high-definition fundus imaging liquid crystal aberration compensator. This innovation was recently recognized after passing expert evaluation organized by the Science and Technology Department of Jilin Province in Changchun. The research, led by Xuan Li, a researcher at the Changchun Institute of Optics and Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, marks a significant step forward in ophthalmic technology. The human retina is part of the ectoderm, while its blood vessels belong to the mesoderm. These vessels are the only ones in the body that can be directly observed without invasive procedures. Clinically, changes in the fundus often reflect systemic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, and more. Therefore, fundus examination plays a crucial role not only in diagnosing eye-related issues but also in assessing the overall health of the body. Existing fundus imaging equipment typically has a resolution limit of about 20 micrometers, making it difficult to observe the smallest blood vessels, which can be as narrow as 5 micrometers. To address this challenge, Xuan Li’s team initiated a project funded by Jilin Province’s high-tech program in 2005. After three years of dedicated research, they achieved remarkable breakthroughs, including the development of a 260,000-drive-unit liquid crystal wavefront corrector. This device enables high-resolution imaging of visual cell contours down to 3 micrometers, significantly improving the accuracy of retinal assessments. The system also overcomes previous limitations in energy efficiency and offers real-time imaging capabilities suitable for video applications. Experts praised the technology for its ability to provide detailed visualization of even the tiniest blood vessels and retinal structures. It can compensate for up to 800 degrees of myopia and 200 degrees of astigmatism, ensuring consistent image quality across a wide range of vision impairments. This advancement not only enhances diagnostic precision but also opens new possibilities for non-invasive early detection of various diseases. Moreover, the system is completely safe, making it an ideal tool for general health screenings. In addition, it holds great promise for future research on retinal and neural stem cell transplantation, offering a potential method to monitor nerve tissue in patients with vision loss. Currently, the system is undergoing clinical trials and is preparing for mass production. With full intellectual property rights, the technology is expected to gain widespread adoption. Jilin Province has pledged strong support for its development, signaling a bright future for this innovative medical tool.
