How to prevent post-cut seedlings

During the late rice transplanting season, summer's high temperatures are on the rise. After the seedlings are transplanted, they may experience transplant shock, leading to slow greening and delayed growth of the late rice, which can negatively impact both the early harvest and overall yield. To prevent transplant damage and ensure healthy growth, the following measures should be taken: First, apply fertilizer at the right time. Before transplanting, it’s important to apply nutrients in batches based on when the rice is being transplanted. Typically, 3 to 5 days before transplanting, apply 5–7 kg of urea or 10–15 kg of ammonium sulfate per mu of paddy field. After the morning dew has dried or in the evening, water the leaves gently to avoid burning. This helps promote root development, encouraging new roots to grow while keeping old roots healthy. Carefully select and cut the seedlings, ensuring minimal damage to the roots, which improves seedling quality and increases the chances of successful transplanting. Second, focus on improving the quality of the seedlings during the pulling process. When selecting seedlings, avoid using too large a clump or tying them too tightly. After pulling, place the seedlings in a ditch with water or in a shaded area—never on a dry board under direct sunlight. Handle the seedlings gently to avoid damaging the leaves or stems. Plan ahead—only pull as many seedlings as you can plant that day to avoid leaving them exposed overnight, which can lead to wilting and loss. Third, avoid transplanting during the hottest parts of the day. Transplanting in intense heat causes excessive transpiration, leading to water loss and potential seedling death. It's best to schedule transplanting after 4 pm when the sun is less intense. If it's cloudy or raining, take advantage of the conditions and organize labor to work quickly. Ensure that the seedlings are planted shallowly, straight, and not buried too deep. After planting, flood the field with enough water to protect the seedlings from drying out due to the sun, which can cause transplant shock and reduce survival rates. By following these steps, farmers can significantly improve the success rate of late rice transplanting, ensuring healthier plants and better yields.
