Study found that menopausal women have increased risk of cancer with leukocytosis

Recent research suggests that postmenopausal women may face a higher risk of certain cancers due to elevated white blood cell counts. A groundbreaking study conducted by U.S. scientists has revealed that an increase in white blood cells among menopausal women is associated with a greater likelihood of developing breast, colorectal, endometrial, and lung cancers, as well as a higher risk of cancer-related mortality.

According to a report from Reuters, Dr. Karen Margolis of the Minnesota Foundation and her team analyzed the initial white blood cell levels of over 140,000 women who were later diagnosed with various types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, and endometrial cancers. The participants were aged between 50 and 79, and none had cancer at the start of the study.

The findings showed that women with the highest white blood cell counts were 15% more likely to develop breast cancer, 19% more likely to get colorectal cancer, 42% more likely to have endometrial cancer, and a striking 63% more likely to develop lung cancer compared to those with the lowest counts. Additionally, these women had a higher risk of dying from breast, colorectal, and lung cancers.

White blood cell count is commonly used as an indicator of infection or inflammation in the body. Dr. Margolis noted that a count above 7,000 per microliter should raise concerns among doctors. However, she also emphasized that most individuals with such levels do not develop cancer or cardiovascular diseases within five to ten years. This study highlights the importance of monitoring blood markers and understanding their potential links to long-term health risks.

As researchers continue to explore the connection between immune system activity and cancer development, this study adds valuable insight into how biological changes during menopause might influence cancer risk. It underscores the need for further investigation and personalized approaches to women’s health care.
